I'm guessing it wasn't food but perhaps the wipes? If so, how did the killer know that he used them all the time? Once Dr. Shuler explained the diagnosis, Monk's imminent death brought out a lot of different reactions. Leland was fueled by desperation to find the killer and fix Monk.
