When is the next Mother’s Day celebration in Nigeria and date in 2020? These are some of the things you should keep a tab on as a mum or as someone who values and cherishes mothers. Who doesn’t?

The date of mother’s day in Nigeria is not really because we wanted to celebrate our mothers, of course right now Nigerians are beginning to celebrate mothers well on mothers day than ever, but the original idea of celebrating mother’s day in Nigeria emanated from the British and it has to do more with religion than mothers.

Mother’s day is celebrated at different times of the year, the date is usually determined by the Easter date which also changes from year to year. Both dates are decided based on the lunar calendar.

Origin of Mother’s day celebration

Mother’s Day celebration usually comes up on fourth Sunday of the Lent establishing it as a church originated day.

Mother’s day originally means the day to visit the mother’s church.  Christians thereafter return back to their various homes to felicitate and offer prayers.

On the way back from the Mother’s Church, youngsters would pick flowers to give their mothers and that became SYMBOLIC towards the Americans fashion or way of celebrating mother’s  Day.

Mother’s Day in the US

The United States hone their own celebration of mother’s day to celebrating mothers rather than the UK’s religious context.

Since many Nigerians don’t understand the original meaning of mother’s day and how it used to be celebrated in religious manners as done in the UK, we tend more to the United States style, we arrived at this by the direct meaning of the day based on literal meaning.

Is mother’s day celebrated in Nigeria?

We have since dedicated the day to when we celebrate our mothers, Nigerians believe that mothers expend so much care with no expectation of gain or returns on their children right from the time of birth and due to this, mothers are our Heroes and deserved to be celebrated, this we do by showering lot’s of gifts and care and reciprocate love on our mothers to show appreciation for all they have done.

In Nigeria, Mother’s Day is unofficial because unlike in many countries in which governments have formally recognized it, the government has little knowledge of it. At the core of the case is religious interest

However, in Nigeria, several organizations and companies have committed to the UK date of mother days. But others also enter the festivities in May because of the powerful effects of US goods throughout the region. Islam has little on Mother’s Day even though the religion fosters and preaches respect.

So it is very much likely when a Christian president makes a remark for Mother’s Day in the country, it may be misinterpreted as a biased declaration for Christianity.

Facebook has been Nigerians’ greatest force. Most are waking up and participating in the party of Facebook Update of Mother’s Day and also celebrating, for most Nigerians they hardly know there are two mothers day as chosen by different countries, so when they see the news whether in March or May then quickly pass the greetings around and circulate the news.
